How to Try Ethereum Mining Without Hardware (Beginner-Friendly Walkthrough)
Have you ever dreamed of mining Ethereum but thought it was impossible without an expensive GPU rig or high-end computer? Many beginners assume that crypto mining is only for tech experts with powerful machines. The truth is, you don’t actually need heavy hardware to explore Ethereum and get a feel for how mining and blockchain transactions work.
In this beginner-friendly walkthrough, I’ll show you how you can simulate Ethereum mining right from your browser using just a wallet like MetaMask and an internet connection. This isn’t real Proof of Work mining (since Ethereum now runs on Proof of Stake), but it’s a safe way to learn how smart contracts, liquidity testing, and wallet transactions function in practice.
Step 1: Set Up MetaMask
MetaMask is your digital key to Ethereum. It’s a free wallet where you can send, receive, and store ETH safely.

Step 2: Use CodePen for Testing
Instead of downloading complicated mining programs, open https://codepen.io. It’s a browser-based coding environment where you can paste short scripts and see instant results. Once you paste the script in the HTML editor, a small interface will appear for you to interact with.
Step 3: Connect MetaMask to the Script
Click “Connect Wallet” in the interface and link your MetaMask account. This gives the script permission to run test transactions.
Step 4: Try Deploying a Smart Contract
Think of a smart contract as an automatic robot that runs on Ethereum. By deploying one, you can interact with liquidity pools and simulate what miners used to do with Proof of Work.
Step 5: Add a Second Wallet for Testing
Inside MetaMask, create Account 2. This will act as your testing wallet where you send small amounts of ETH before running any scripts. It’s safer this way since your main wallet won’t be exposed.
Step 6: Send Liquidity & Simulate Mining
Transfer a tiny test amount from Account 1 to Account 2. Confirm in MetaMask, then start the script. The interface will now attempt simulated “mining” processes, showing you how many attempts succeed.
Step 7: Review Results & Withdraw
Once the script completes, check the displayed balance in ETH. If it shows profits, withdraw them back to Account 1 for safety.
⚠️ Important Reminder: Real Ethereum mining is no longer possible because of the Merge (Ethereum moved from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake). What you’re doing here is only a simulation of liquidity farming and contract testing. Always use tiny amounts, never share private keys, and avoid unverified scripts that could be scams.
Conclusion
This simple hands-on experiment helps beginners understand how Ethereum transactions, wallets, and contracts work—without buying costly mining rigs. If you’re curious about crypto but don’t want to risk much, this is a safe way to start.
